Education Needs Massive ICT Contribution To Attain Vision 20 2020

The minister of education, Nyesom Wike, says the education sector needs quality contributions in order to meet the objectives of vision 20: 2020. He said the contributions are likely to come through the development and deployment of ICT in the education sector. Wike said this at an event to mark the 2014 edition of the Information Technology Professionals Assembly. The minister of education, Nyesom Wike who was represented by the Permanent Secretary, Macjohn Nwabiala, said the education sector has put in place, a number of initiatives aimed at increasing learning in order to bring opportunities to the doorsteps of Nigerians of all ages. Macjohn Nwabiala, said, “It is on record that the federal ministry of education has attained giant strides in the development and deployment of ICT through the combination of the national policy on ICT in education." He added that in spite of these achievements, there are still challenges confronting the education sector especially in the advancement of information technology. “Epileptic power supply, insufficient pull of IT professionals, no ICT literacy among teachers and educational administrators.” The Chairman of Council, IT Professionals, Sekinat Yusuf, and the guest speaker at the event, Liz Bacon said, information technology has paved the way for a developing country like Nigeria. Sekinat Yusuf, said, "From now on, since we have that frame work, it is binding on them, it is the guidelines they must follow in the teaching of information technology in our schools." Liz Bacon, said, "Information technology is having a huge impact on the lives of everyday people and I think Nigeria has huge potential to actually embrace that and be at the leading edge."
