The Archbishop of Abuja archdiocese John Cardinal Onaiyekan says Nigeria is in a state of emergency that requires a grand alliance of men of goodwill to rescue the nation.

In his message at the funeral mass and interment of the Mbalom Martyrs killed by herdsmen on April 24, 2018. He noted that if government fails in performing is primary role of providing security, then a radical change is inevitable.
While wondering why murderers are allowed to move around without hindrance, the archbishop warned that if it persists people might be pushed to resort to self defence.
Cardinal Onaiyekan urged Nigerians to be alert, vigilant, and be their brother's keeper.
Noting that what happened on April 24 is condemnable, Archbishop Onaiyekan said it is inexcusable the incessant killings in the state and should not be allowed to continue.
While praying for the repose of the soul of the departed, Onaiyekan reminded all to also pray to god to touch the heart of the killers to repent.
