AUSTRALIA: COLLAR BOMBER APPEALS COURT DECISION
The man who strapped a fake collar bomb around the neck of a Sydney schoolgirl and then fled to the United States launched an appeal against his sentence in a Sydney court on Tuesday.
Paul Douglas Peters argued that the judge failed to take into account that he was mentally ill at the time he committed the crime.
Peters' barrister, Tim Game, told the Court of appeal that his sentence was harsh considering at the time he was suffering bi-polar disorder, depression and had been drinking heavily.
Game added that Peters' had no past criminal history and a good prospect of rehabilitation should have also worked in his favour.
The court’s decision is not expected for several weeks.
Peters was jailed for 13 and a half years on November 20, 2012 after an Australian court ruled he had instilled unimaginable fear into his victim.
