Edo Assembly Crisis: Senate Wades In; Sets Up Ad-Hoc Committee
The Upper Legislative Chamber arrived at the resolution following a point of order from Senator Opeyemi Bamidele from Ekiti State drawing attention to the alleged crisis in the State Assembly; calling on the Senate to set up ad-hoc Committee to look into the matter.
The election of the Speaker, Frank Okiye by nine members-elect during inauguration last month stoked the conflict believed to have widened the gulf between the Governor, Godwin Obaseki and the National Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress, Adam Oshiomhole.
In his contribution, Senator Istifanus Gyang from Plateau Central drew attention to a section of the 1999 Constitution which spells out the grounds upon which the Senate can take over the affairs of the State Assembly.
Senate subsequently, resolved to set up ad-hoc committee to liaise with that if the House of Representatives to probe into the matter.
