Media Bill Public Hearing

comments
by AIT / 6 months ago / Nation
The Nigerian Press Council amendment bill is expected to be put to public scrutiny on monday by the senate.

Media Bill Public Hearing

The Nigerian Guild of Editors is already mobilizing for the public hearing because of the criticism trailing the bill across Nigerian Press organizations.

At the end of its standing committee meeting in lagos, the guild issued a communique in which it condemned the bill which it likened to the infamous decree 4 of 1984 which provision was replicated in decree 43 of 1993.

The bill contains provisions which seek to criminalize Journalism practice, erode the power of the courts and undermine the constitutional responsibilities of academic institutions.

The Nigerian Editors consider the bill as provocative, Anti-people, contradicts the basic principle of press freedom and therefore prevailed on the senate to strike down the piece of legislation. Members of the Guild, the Nigeria Union of Journalists and other interested bodies are expected to raise serious opposition to the bill at the public hearing.
