Accompanied by some other members of the committee, the Chairman Abdul Ningi, demanded to know the performance level of the Sure-P intervention scheme. He asked for the highlights of the terms of reference, of limitations, and where necessary, of successes and challenges.
Chairman of the Presidential committee, Christopher Kolade unfolded the scorecard of the scheme as well as the challenges facing them. He said, “as far as we are concerned as a committee, internally, we have decided ourselves into sub-committees. Those sub-committees have the responsibility of overseeing specific projects, for instance, roads and bridges or maternal and child healthcare.”
Some of the Senators bared their minds on the scheme which is targeted at poverty alleviation and infrastructural development. Nurudeen Abatemi, a committee member stated explicitly that they have no reason to have gathered if exactly how much should accrue to Sure-P cannot be determined.
Yet another committee member, Benedict Ayode did not bother mincing words at this meeting. He said, “Please, I also want you to recognize the fact that the money talked about 3,000 persons job creation per state. It’s actually not job creation; it’s an unnecessary indulgence of the youths.”
It should be recalled that the Sure-P committee was inaugurated in February, 2012 to oversee the management of funds generated from the removal of fuel subsidy and also facilitate and monitor the projects done under the scheme. Any failure would therefore be laid at the feet of the committee hence the Senators’ demand for transparency and accountability in the execution of all projects proposed and implemented.
