Troops Destroy Illegal Refineries, Kidnappers' Camps In Niger Delta
The troops of the Nigerian Army have destroyed 74 illegal refineries and some camps belonging to kidnappers and militants in Bayelsa and Rivers States.
The Acting Director, Army Public Relations, Colonel Sani Usman, said in a statement on Friday that the troops of the 2 Brigade, Port Harcourt, carried out the operation during the ongoing "Operation Crocodile Smile."
Colonel Usman said that the troops destroyed the illegal refineries and the kidnappers with the use of 'swan buggy and other specialist equipment.'
He also said that troops of the 34 Artillery Brigade involved in the operations raided two hideouts of kidnappers and killed two of the kingpins in Ohaji Egbema Local Government Area of Imo State on Thursday.
Colonel Usman identified one of the killed kidnap kingpins as Chigozie alias Chi Boy.
The Acting Director, Army Public Relations said that the kidnappers' camps in Umuobi and Umudike Forests belonged to 'De-Welk and De-Gbam' cult groups in the area.
"Quite a number of the gang members were believed to have escaped with gun shot wounds."
"The troops recovered military uniforms, telephones and household items from the hoodlums.
"The troops of Sub Sector Bravo raided other hideouts of suspected kidnappers on Wednesday following a tip off at Akupoku community but made no arrest," the statement read.
